A fantastic concept is the creation of webisodes or web series. If you have a great idea that could be made into a TV series and would like to monetize it, you should think about producing a series of clips which can be in a multitude of formats/genres, ranging from reality TV, drama, game shows. The list goes on. The great thing is that the production value doesn’t have to be as high as if you were pitching to a broadcaster. You will also have more freedom with your project. You will still have to be careful so that whatever you come up with is entertaining and is at a level of quality that people will not pick out as a rushed not well thought out production. Do some research on youtube to see which series have been successful. Sometimes the simplest ones are the most popular.
Once you come up with a concept make sure that you have all the resources to make it happen. Just like with short films, planning is extremely important. Read my blog on how to make a short film to get a real idea before doing anything. You will need to plan out the whole series, make sure you have enough ideas (plan a brainstorming session) you don’t have to plan out every detail, but it is a good idea to have a plan.
Each episode does not need to be any longer then 10 minutes, I would for starters set the limit to 5 minutes. You have to keep in mind the people who will eventually consume your videos. They will want to see it when they are on the bus or waiting for something so they won’t want to start watching something that will go for an hour as they can’t finish it. They call these short clips ‘bite size entertainment’.
Pilot Once you have the concept down and a rough outline for the series (6 to 8 episodes) then organising the production of a pilot episode is a great way to nut out any possible problems before going into full production. This pilot can also be used to get possible funding for the project as well. Just like with your short films, you should be able to find a possible sponsor for your web series. Even if it’s equipment, food or drink. You can use these as payment for your crew.
Here is an example of one of our web series that we are producing at the moment. The concept is a cooking show for blokes and it all started out when Troy decided to film himself with his phone camera cooking really easy but tasty meals. Now we are shooting it on HD, we have created a website and we plan to find a distributor to find new markets for it and an income stream.
Here is one of the episodes:

The key is to get a following so it’s important that you have a Facebook Fan page, twitter profile and that you regularly update these. This is a whole new subject on it’s own.
We are at a stage where we can go out and approach possible supporters for the show so we have set up some meetings with beverage companies and some food suppliers.
Let us know if you have a similar project or are planning to do something like this, we’d love to hear from you!
Here is a great clip which will give you more info on how to create videos for the web in general:
